Start with the numbers you actually know. For income questions, distinguish gross pay from net pay. For borrowing questions, consider the rate, term, fees, taxes and insurance that apply to your situation. For savings questions, treat the rate of return as an assumption rather than a guarantee.
For Canadian tax, payroll, registered-account and lending questions, rules can change and personal circumstances matter. Use official government, employer, lender or account records to confirm important figures.
Ontario's overtime rule: 44 hours at 1.5×
Under Ontario's Employment Standards Act, most employees earn overtime after 44 hours in a single work week — measured weekly, not daily — at 1.5 times the regular rate. The formula: overtime pay = hourly rate × 1.5 × overtime hours. Work 4 overtime hours at $25/hour and the premium is 25 × 1.5 × 4 = $150.00 for the week. That $150 stacks on top of regular pay for the first 44 hours (44 × 25 = $1,100), making the week's gross $1,250.00.
What $150 of overtime is really worth after tax
Overtime is taxed at your marginal rate — the rate on the next dollar you earn. For an Ontario worker around the $80,000 bracket, that marginal rate is about 29.65% (20.5% federal + 9.15% provincial on income in that range). So $150 of overtime keeps roughly $105.53 after income tax (150 × (1 − 0.2965)). CPP and EI also apply to overtime earnings until their annual maximums ($4,230.45 and $1,123.07), trimming the paycheque a little more — but income tax is the big bite. Bottom line: a $150 overtime premium is worth about $105 in spending money, still a solid return on the extra hours.
Who is exempt from overtime in Ontario
Not everyone gets the 1.5× premium. Ontario exempts managers and supervisors who genuinely perform managerial duties, plus certain regulated professionals and specific industries with their own hours-of-work rules. Job title alone does not decide it — the ESA looks at what the work actually involves, and some roles people assume are exempt are not. If you are unsure where you stand, the exemption list in the Employment Standards Act is the authority — not your offer letter — and edge cases are worth an employment lawyer's opinion.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this ontario overtime pay calculator guide?
It is an educational estimate. Results depend on the assumptions you enter and may not match a payroll statement, lender decision, tax assessment or account statement.
What should I enter?
Use your own income, price, balance, rate, payment or contribution assumptions. For tax and payroll questions, verify important figures with official sources.
Can I use this for a final financial decision?
Use it as a planning tool. Confirm final amounts with the relevant employer, lender, financial institution or government source.
Is overtime calculated daily or weekly in Ontario?
Weekly. The 44-hour threshold applies to the work week as a whole, so a single 10-hour day triggers nothing by itself. A few industries have special rules with different thresholds, but the weekly 44-hour standard covers most Ontario employees.
Will overtime push me into a higher tax bracket?
Only the extra dollars are taxed at the higher marginal rate — your existing income keeps its original rate, so there is no cliff where a raise costs you money. Withholding on the overtime cheque is also just an estimate; the final tax is settled when you file.
Can my employer give time off instead of overtime pay?
Yes, with your written agreement: 1.5 hours of paid time off for each overtime hour, to be taken within 3 months (extendable to 12 months in writing). Without that agreement, the default is overtime pay at 1.5× the regular rate.
